In workplaces where combustible dusts or gases are present, controlling ignition sources is critical to maintaining a safe and compliant environment. ATEX zoning classifications help businesses assess these risks and determine what equipment is suitable for use in hazardous areas.
At Kerstar, we manufacture a range of ATEX-certified vacuum cleaners designed to safely operate in dust and gas zoned environments - with both electric and air-powered solutions to suit your needs.
What are Dust and Gas Zones?
Under the ATEX directive and DSEAR regulations, hazardous areas are classified into zones depending on how frequently explosive atmospheres are expected to occur:
Dust Zones
- Zone 21: Where combustible dust is likely to occur occasionally in normal operation.
- Zone 22: Where explosive dust clouds are not likely in normal operation but may occur briefly.
Gas Zones
- Zone 1: Where explosive gases or vapours are likely to be present occasionally.
- Zone 2: Where these are unlikely in normal operation, but if they do occur, it will be for a short period.
Each zone requires equipment designed to prevent ignition - especially mobile equipment like vacuum cleaners used in cleaning and maintenance.
Kerstar’s KEVA Class H range is specially designed to safely collect hazardous and conductive dust in Dust Zone 22 environments, incorporating a H14 HEPA filter and achieving a filtration efficiency of 99.995%.
Where explosive gases may be present, electrical equipment may not be safe to use. The Kerstar KAV Class H range is air-powered, making it ideal for Gas Zone 1 environments. Also incorporating a H14 HEPA filter, they are a low maintenance option due to there being no electrical components.
